I’ve been here for 12 days already. Our ministry is with an organization called Vision English Club. We live on the top floor of the Vision center… with no elevator. Which means there are 4 flights of stairs in between my bedroom and the kitchen. Our hosts are all from South Korea and live in the same building with, along with some other Korean volunteers. We work with and see lots of other Korean missionaries who live in the area. We even go to a Korean church. So most of the culture we’ve been experiencing and learning and most of the food we’ve been eating has all been Korean! It’s very interesting and I’ve been learning so much. Like how South Korea sends out the second highest amount of missionaries, next to the US. When people back home ask me how the Vietnamese culture is, I say I don’t really know; we’ve mostly experienced Korean culture!
But whether eating Korean or Vietnamese food, it has mostly been very good! Some food is strange, like squid or raw egg. But I’m usually able to find things that I like.
During the week, we have several English classes that we go to teach, some to kids and some to adults. And every weeknight evening we host an English ‘club’ at the vision center where we live. At most we’ll have around 25 people, from young adults to people in their 60s, all coming to practice speaking and learning English. For this class we generally try to have a more ‘gospel’ undertone. We’ll teach about a topic like joy, and then ask discussion questions and play games to help them practice speaking. It’s very fun. Most the people who come to this class are Vietnamese, and I’ve learned that in Vietnamese people are very outgoing and relational. It’s not hard to talk with them or get to know them. Sometimes they ask to hang out on the weekend to show us around! They’re very kind. Koreans are also very kind and very hospitable I’ve learned. They love to do things for us and take care of us; it’s very sweet.
Prayer request: our whole team and some of the other volunteers here are getting very sick. Please pray for healing.
God bless.
Shelby
